Family History
Samuel Story
It all started with Joseph and Mary Jane Samuel, (a.k.a) Jane and this is how their story goes. Joseph Samuel was born between 1845 and 1849 in Kershaw County, South Carolina and his lovingly wife, Mary Jane was born around 1852. According to oral history that has been passed down through Mary Jane’s grandchildren, she was born in the West Indies. We are not sure when she arrived in the United States but we do know by age 25 she was married to Joseph and they were blessed with their first child, William, somewhere around 1870. After which, eight more children were added to their family; Della (Glenn), Sallie (Glenn), Martha, Catherine (Tillman), Joe, Frank, (twins) Mary Jane (Dixon) and Rena. Sometime after Joseph died, mamma Mary Jane resided with her daughters, little Mary Jane and Rena in Kershaw, SC in 1920. She died November 12, 1927 and is buried at Mt. Sinai A.M.E Church in Elgin, SC. From the nine offspring born to Joseph and Mary Jane came 36 grandchildren and from these 36 grandchildren came 2,000 plus offspring. These Samuel descendants have added to the rich Samuel family legacy. God has indeed blessed this family to be fruitful! We are still multiplying and adding to the Samuel family tree. With God’s grace and strength Samuel descendants will grow stronger in faith, family love and unity.
